Though we didnt have a reporting relationship, our mutual success was clearly dependent on our ability to collaborate.It was one of the most difficult working relationships Ive ever experienced- and an extremely stressful one. As I reflect back on that time, I realize there was one major ingredient missing from our collaboration. The problem was we never whispered those three little words that everyone wants to hear from their closest co-workersI trust you.The lack of trust was frustrating to my team and me, and it made everything we did so much more difficult Conversations took longer, coming to an agreement was excruciating (if not impossible), and negotiating everything, from resources to outcomes, was exasperating.Maybe youre in a s imilar situation. Perhaps you know the relationship isnt quite right, but youre not sure why its so hard to get along. Every meeting seems to erupt in frustration you sense theres a hidden agenda alongside the one on the table in front of you. In The Speed of Trust, Stephen M.R. Covey suggests that trust is essential for a team to function effectively. When trust is high, performance accelerates. Covey describes it as a leavening agent for performance. And when trust is lacking, the opposite is true. As I found with Angela (and likely, she with me), because we didnt trust each other, everything took longer, felt harder, and, as a result, cost more- emotionally and financially. You might think, as I did long ago, that its the other persons responsibility to trust you. But its not. Its your responsibility to invite others to trust in you- and you do this by behaving in way that exemplifies your trustworthiness. In research at Ohio State University, Roy Lewicki and Edward C. Tomlinson offer a few practical steps to overcome the conflict created by lack of trust. Read on for their suggestions about how to increase others trust in you and rectify your working relationships. Do Your Job WellCovey says trust is a function of two things character and competence. Angela and I were certainly competent when it came to doing our respective parts well. However, a big part of our assignment required us to work interdependently, and neither of us was getting that right. People trust others who get stuff done, so when you dont do your job well- even just a portion of it- its harder for people to trust you. Be CongruentThis is where the character comes in. When your words are aligned with your actions, people will trust you. Angela and I were both saying, Yes we want to move forward. But in all honesty, we both feared that the other was trying to muck in our program, so we werent doing everything we could to actually move the project forward. That disconnect between our words and our actions caused both of us to seem untrustworthy. Honor CommitmentsTrust is built on a consistent pattern of each of us doing what we say we will do. People watch for this and make assessments about your trustworthiness based on it. (The researchers call this Do What We Say We Will Do, or DWWSWWD.) You promised youd have the report ready by the end of the day, then turn up empty handed? Thats a strike against your credibility.Communicate TransparentlyRemember that hidden agenda perception I mentioned earlier? Yep- total trust killer. When you arent transparent about your intentions (e.g., what youre trying to achieve, what youre concerned about, or what you really want to accomplish in a project meeting), you negate the others ability to trust you. Be Compassionate Toward OthersTrust grows when you show care and concern for others. For example, I never once asked Angela what kept her up at night. We never discussed the business risk or personal vulnerability we felt as we tri ed to manage these two huge programs. I see now that a simple conversation like that could have been an incredible bridge builder. When you have to work interdependently- and in this day and age, who doesnt?- the degree of trust you have with others can make or break your efforts. Bioengineering May be Key in Cancer Fight Bioengineering May be Key in Cancer Fight Bioengineering a Key Weapon Against CancerImmunotherapy, or the harnessing of the human bodys natural immune ordnungsprinzip in order to fight disease, is not new a new concept.In fact, its roots can be traced back more than a century, to the groundbreaking work of New York City surgeon Dr. William Coley, who first used immune response to treat krebs in the late nineteenth century. Coleys primitive treatments were generally effective, leading to remission in several different types of cancers, but the advent of new surgical techniques and radiation therapy in the early twentieth century left his immune-based treatments behind and immunotherapy fell out of common use.That all changed in the 1970s, when researchers went back to study Coleys original work in an effort to develop new tools in the then-growing fight against cancer. By that time, medical science more fully understood the connection between cancerand the immune system, and welches focused on ways to program the body to respond to pathogens or tumors in a certain way, allowing patients to effectively heal themselves.Since then, the field has grown dramatically, with a whole host of new drugs and treatments for cancer and other diseases based on immune system response. Researchers are now even beginning to find ways to selectively engineer immune cells in order to trigger specific responses. To, for instance, target a particular tumor or respond to a certain illness.The fast-growing field of immunoengineering is making that happen.A Cancer-Driven MarketThose investigating the immune systems role in cancer have led to a lot of new ideas, a lot of excitement about new approaches, saysDr. John Wilson, an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, whose work is focused on developing new immune system-based therapies to reprogram cancer cells to kill themselves. Fro m my perspective, I think that the recent excitement in immunoengineering has largely been born out of the excitement of cancer immunotherapy. There have always been people doing drug delivery for vaccinations and infectious diseases, but as its really blown up I think cancer has been, at least in the academic world, a big driver for expanding research in this area.Dr. John Wilson (left) is looking for ways to teach immune systems to fight cancer tumors. Image Vanderbilt UniversityUntil about a decade ago, cancer immunotherapy was still somewhat understudied, even within the broader field of immunology, says Wilson. In recent years, however, the approval of checkpoint blockade therapieswhich block inhibitory checkpoints in the body in order to restore proper immune system function in the fight against cancerand the pharmaceutical segment that has grown up around that technology has brought a renewed focus to the promise and potential of cancer immunology.Research around T cells is a good example of this. These cells are the true warriors of the immune system, the cells that go out and actually kill tumor cells, and there are more than 25 million different types of them in the body. But the fact that some people respond better than others to immunotherapy treatments points to the fact that having the right kinds of T cells is critical to successful immune response. With this information, researchers are now learning which T cells perform the best against certain cancers and are developing ways to create or otherwise promote those cells in patients. This type of immunoengineering work is driving further expansion of similar treatments.Its exciting to see more people getting involved in recognizing the power of the immune system, saysWilson. But I think that whats accelerated a lot of this is an increasing recognition of its role in lots of different diseases.Wide-ranging ApplicationsCancer is just the beginning, however.The immune system is being leveraged in everything from tissue regeneration to allergy treatment, making use of Big Data, structural analysis and other new computational tools that didnt exist just a few years ago.For instance, Dr. Alice Tomei, an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Miami, is working on immunotherapy treatments for Type I diabetes as head of the Islet Immunoengineering Laboratory at the Diabetes Research Institute.For us, immunoengineering is more like a different way of addressing a problem, she says. For Type I diabetes, its about autoimmunity. How do we manage autoimmunity? How do we address autoimmunity from an engineering point of view? So what I do, I engineer cells with biomaterial.Tomeis work is focused on engineering cells, which are found in insulin, and working with stem cell-derived beta cells to control the size and resp onses of these cells, impacting the bodys insulin response. This works for Type I diabetes, she explaines, because the disease is largely an autoimmune response that has gotten out of whack, killing off the bodys natural beta cells and forcing the patient to become insulin dependent.So what we are developing are these biomaterials that can actually convert these cells, the ones that kill beta cells, and either delete them or control them, she says. You can do that by combining bio-materials with immunoregulatory factors. This is very common in the field of autoimmune engineering, because certain things that you want to delete in cancer you also want them in autoimmunity.The lesson in all of this work is that the immune system is very, very powerful, saysDr. Brian Baker, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame, and engineering approaches to immunotherapy are changing the game for medical science.In fact, even the basic drugs that are avai lable right now, which are mostly non-engineered immunotherapies, are producing incredible patient responses.
